On Wednesday, November 20, 2019, the Plumosa School of the Arts had a busy Garden Club afternoon, filled with education, activities, foodies, and fun. This school property is one of the newest Joseph P Cory Foundation’s (JPCF) “Garden of Hope” recipient, with special thanks to Ms. Lisa Peterfreund and the Merrill G. and Emita E. Hastings Foundation, for its 2019 contribution.
Students assembled to implement a short pre-test assessment, created to substantiate the significance of school gardens, one of the many health and wellness initiatives that has gained the School District of Palm Beach County, its gold star designation nationwide, overseen by Ms. Jeannie Rizzo. After the test, students received JPCF tee shirts, and participated in a discussion about the ingredients in their specially prepared corn salsa, a recipe that had been taught to them that week, in conjunction with the spirit of Thanksgiving. Students remarked about the scents that were wafting through the air, as Mrs. Cory performed her culinary magic with organic, fresh ingredients, replete with color, texture and flavor!
It was a wonderful afternoon, with many thanks to all who made it so memorable and successful. Mrs. Sally Smollar, their club teacher/sponsor, also the school’s media specialist, Mrs. Nada Cory, president and founder of JPCF, Ms. Stephanie Camhi, a third-year medical student at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine MD/MPH program, Choice program student volunteer Starvensky Joseph, and Mrs. Lisa Richman, program coordinator and guest “Pilgrim”.
