A big thank you to Plumosa School of the ArtsGarden of Hopeclub teacher/sponsor Sally Smollar. Media specialist Mrs. Smollar welcomed the Joseph P Cory foundation’s “Captain” Nada Cory and her mate Pirate SEA “C”into her classroom, for a fun and educational afternoon. These students benefit from the yearlong program, overseen by Mrs. Smollar, which supports the garden and curriculum, provided by the foundation.
Today’s topic was Vitamin C, and students were given their official “pirate crew” bandanas, to jumpstartthe reading of a fun pirate story, which speaks of Vitamin Cdeficiencies from an unexpected “too long” journey at sea.
Followed by a lesson on the best fruits and vegetables that contain Vitamin C, its benefits, and what to grow in their garden, were discussed. Along with the creation of an “orange” pomanderthat each student crafted, a “C” snack, and herbal “sniff” and taste session was enjoyed by the engaged class.
Students that participated in the 2021 “Grow it Forward” Scholarship, received certificates and prizes for the efforts. This annual competition gives students an opportunity to strut their stuff, and show just how much Gardens of Hope has made on them and their families.
