Today, September 22nd, marks the first day of Hammock Pointe Elementary yearly Garden Club. The club has exceeded previous student participation, and we are lucky to have such a large working organic garden to serve all the students.
For the past few Saturdays, parents assisted teacher Holly Nilsen, giving of their precious time to help clear away the summer’s overgrowth, making way for a full season of nutritious fresh herbs and vegetables. Zone 10 is still a “hot bed”, literally, so lesson one, “Ready, Set, Grow”, will guide students to “plant seeds” in a controlled environment, and to monitor their progress. Next visit in October will be the big reveal, providing an opportunity to plant some mature seedlings, jumpstarting our success, and making way for additional lessons on tending, cooking, and so much more.
Students were certainly eager, marching out single file with high fives and smiles of promise. Founder and President Nada Cory led the course discussion and staff helped students pick their seeds, plant, water, and chart. As always, a healthy snack and hugs followed.
We look forward to Hammock Pointe and other campus progress throughout the school year. We have gained the support of several community leaders, such as Whole Foods, and encourage sponsors to help fulfill our mission and expand our programs and resources in a variety of opportunities. You can be a seed of change!
