What do fiddles, a sawmill, sugar cane press, and a farmstead garden have in common?
A lot of fun, families, and friends!
The Joseph P Cory Foundation (JPCF), collaborated with Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation, Saturday, November 5th, to showcase their farm stead “Garden of Hope”, in conjunction with Riverbend Park’s annual Living History Day.
On the hour, Founder and President Nada Cory delivered a lecture on assorted related topics, supported with an opportunity for attendees to either plant potted seeds they could take home, or to put into the on-site garden.
JPCF volunteers manned several of the interactive projects that included age-appropriate hands-on funs such as “My Plate”, “You Are What You Eat”, “Think Like a Chef”, “Funny Photo Frame”, and a “Food for Your Brain” Reading library donated by Valerie the “Booksmith”. Nada opened her own “story vault” created from real life adventures of her experiences growing up on her Croatian homestead, with attentive listeners craving more.
This garden, as well as others in the community and schools, is one many donated to fulfill their mission of empowering people and communities to achieve wellness and wellbeing and is being planted to strengthen the urban agriculture movement – garden to table – by growing local produce using ecological practices. The garden looks wonderful, and is maintained by Riverbend Park staff, and the excellent skillful volunteers of Jill Cheritis’ Fab and Fun Friends organization.
The facts don’t lie, about three-fourths of the American populations has an eating pattern that is low in vegetables, fruits, dairy and oils. More than half is exceeding the recommendations for sugars, saturated fats, and sodium. One in five children are obese and in danger to develop diseases that were once considered adult limited. Please Help us plant seeds of change today.
